Share

April brought strong year-over-year growth for sports betting in Massachusetts, with both online and retail markets contributing to a solid financial performance. According to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, total handle for the month reached $690.2 million—up 14.4% from April 2024.

Good to know

  • Massachusetts collected $13.2 million in taxes from April’s adjusted revenue.
  • DraftKings led the market with over $343 million in bets.
  • Hold rate for the month reached 9.8%, up from last year’s 8.4%.

While the April handle was slightly lower than in March, operators benefited from more favorable outcomes during NBA and NHL playoff action. Gross sports betting revenue for the month climbed 33.6% year-over-year, landing at $67.6 million. Adjusted revenue totaled $65.9 million, from which the state took in over $13 million in taxes. Year-to-date, Massachusetts has now generated more than $55 million in tax revenue from sports wagering.

The improved hold rate in April, now at 9.8%, gave sportsbooks a stronger edge than the 8.4% posted the previous April. However, it marked the second month in a row with a hold rate under 10%. The state’s sportsbooks have seen at least $600 million in monthly betting volume every month since September 2024.

DraftKings Maintains Strong Lead

DraftKings remained the top performer among online operators with a $343 million handle. That total increased nearly 13% year-over-year, although it fell slightly from March. The company’s $38.6 million in gross revenue gave it an 11.26% hold—the highest among all mobile sportsbooks in the state.

FanDuel came in second with $185.9 million in wagers and $18.4 million in gross revenue. Its 9.9% hold edged close to double digits but still fell short of DraftKings’ rate. BetMGM and Fanatics followed in third and fourth positions with $55.1 million and $49.3 million in handles, respectively.

Other operators included ESPN BET, which handled $21.7 million in bets at an 8.65% hold, and Caesars, which posted the lowest hold among online sportsbooks at just 3.56% from $21.1 million in wagers.

Massachusetts online operators collectively contributed $680.5 million to the April handle. Across all mobile books, the average hold was 9.86%.

Retail Betting Slips

Retail sportsbooks saw weaker numbers. Total handle fell to $9.7 million, with a 5.2% win rate. Encore Boston Harbor led the retail market with $4.9 million in bets and a 7.8% hold. Plainridge Park Casino followed with $3.1 million in wagers but had just a 3.9% win rate. MGM Springfield posted $1.6 million in handle but failed to generate any revenue.
