Massachusetts posted its biggest sports betting month to date with October wagers climbing to $892.2 million, according to new data from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. The total represented a 19.3 percent year-over-year gain and surpassed every previous monthly figure in the state’s regulated market.
Good to Know
Online action continued to drive the state forward. The MGC confirmed that online operators took in $879.6 million of the month’s total handle, reflecting the dominant role mobile betting plays in Massachusetts. Taxes reached $14.2 million, split between a 20 percent rate for online and 15 percent for retail wagers.
The $892.2 million handle also stood 11.5 percent higher than the previous month, when sportsbooks combined for $800 million. A statewide hold of 8.2 percent shaped October’s revenue results, supported primarily by the even stronger 8.3 percent online rate.
Retail betting played a much smaller role. Encore Boston Harbor topped the three in-person locations, though none exceeded $6 million for the month. Nearly every online sportsbook outperformed that figure individually.
The October leaderboard once again showed how strongly the largest operators performed in Massachusetts. DraftKings led the market with a $447.4 million handle and $38.5 million in taxable revenue. The Boston-based operator posted an 8.9 percent hold and delivered year-over-year increases of 16.7 percent in handle and 57.3 percent in revenue. FanDuel followed with a $237.3 million handle and $17.3 million in revenue, and its 9.3 percent hold ranked as the highest among all online operators.
Fanatics continued to push forward in a big way. The brand reached $82.4 million in wagers and $7.5 million in revenue, supported by year-over-year jumps of 133.9 percent for handle and 272.8 percent for revenue. No other mid-tier operator saw anything close to that kind of growth. BetMGM recorded $55 million in handle and $3.6 million in taxable revenue, reflecting a 10.9 percent handle increase even though its revenue slipped slightly compared to last year.
ESPN Bet finished October with $27.7 million in wagers and $2.1 million in revenue, posting gains of 10.8 percent and 39.3 percent year-over-year. Caesars closed out the month with $25 million in handle and $1.4 million in revenue, both rising at double-digit rates compared to October of last year. Bally Bet remained at the bottom of the operator list, generating $4.8 million in wagers and $314,452.40 in revenue after posting year-over-year declines of 6.1 percent and 10.9 percent.
The new handle record placed Massachusetts fourth among all US states for October. Only New York ($2.7 billion), New Jersey ($1.2 billion), and Pennsylvania ($968.5 million) posted higher totals. North Carolina followed at $811.4 million.
The state’s casino sector also delivered a strong showing. Gross gaming revenue reached $96.9 million for October, generating $27.9 million in taxes. Both figures landed modestly higher than October of last year.
