Massachusetts continues its crackdown on unauthorized sports betting operators, recently issuing cease-and-desist orders against BetOnline.ag and SportsBetting.ag.
Good to know
Attorney General Andrea Campbell’s office instructed the two offshore operators to immediately stop processing bets from Massachusetts residents. The letters specifically identified BetOnline.ag and SportsBetting.ag as companies illegally offering online gambling services in the state.
In her letter, Campbell highlighted, “It is illegal in Massachusetts to engage in commercial gambling except where expressly authorized by the Commonwealth,” clarifying further that sports betting in Massachusetts must strictly comply with licensing laws.
The Attorney General’s office also accused the sportsbooks of misleading customers. They allegedly displayed pictures of American sports teams and famous athletes to imply a U.S.-based presence, despite both firms operating out of Panama City, Panama.
Both BetOnline.ag and SportsBetting.ag received explicit warnings about potential legal actions. According to Campbell’s notice, continued operation could result in injunctive relief, restitution, and fines reaching up to $5,000 per violation, along with covering the state’s investigative and legal expenses.
