Share

Maryland Lottery and Gaming has shared its sports betting numbers for March 2025, showing a total handle of $588.5 million across both mobile and retail platforms. Bettors saw $540.6 million returned in payouts, leaving an overall hold of $47.9 million.

The majority of wagers came through mobile sportsbooks, which generated $573.4 million in handle. Retail sportsbooks contributed a smaller share at $15.1 million. The state reported a combined hold rate of about 8.1% for the month.

Professional basketball topped all sports with $150.6 million wagered, followed by NCAA basketball with $87.6 million. These numbers were expected, given the timing of March Madness. The hold on pro basketball was 4.9%, yielding $7.3 million. NCAA basketball had a slightly higher hold of 5.2%, bringing in $4.5 million.

Tennis betting reached $30.5 million in handle and delivered a $2.3 million hold. Soccer followed with $18.6 million wagered and a $796,420 hold. Baseball, though still early in its season, saw $15.6 million in bets and produced $489,827 in hold.

Interestingly, NCAA football reported the only negative return. Bettors staked just $8,041 but were paid out $30,167, resulting in a negative hold of -$22,126. That equals a staggering -275.2% hold for the sport during March.

Overall, since the start of the fiscal year, Maryland sportsbooks have recorded $4.8 billion in handle and $515.9 million in hold.

For March alone, sports betting generated $4.4 million in taxes. Retail sportsbooks contributed $81,455, while mobile platforms brought in the remaining $4.3 million.
