Louisiana sportsbooks handled nearly $383 million in bets during January, according to the latest report from the Louisiana Gaming Control Board. Online betting accounted for the majority of activity, reaching $355 million, while retail locations handled $28 million.

Compared to the previous year, online sports betting increased by 11.7%. Retail sportsbooks, however, saw a 2.1% drop in activity. On a month-over-month basis, total wagers declined by $7 million.

Net proceeds from online betting reached nearly $38.3 million, while retail sportsbooks reported $2.5 million in net proceeds. The state collected $5.8 million in tax revenue from sports betting for the month.

Louisiana introduced a statewide ban on prop betting for individual college athletes during the summer. The state said it took action “for the safety and integrity of athletes.” Despite the ban, wagers on totals, point spreads, and game outcomes remain allowed. Prop bets related to full team statistical performances will also continue to be available after August.

Prop bets focus on specific in-game statistics, such as the number of touchdowns in a football game or the total points a basketball player might score. Unlike traditional wagers, which focus on the final score or spread, prop bets allow players to wager on smaller aspects of a game.
