Kian Harratt Suspended for FA Betting Rule Breach

Kian Harratt, the forward for Huddersfield Town, has received a four-month suspension and a £3,200 fine for violating the Football Association’s (FA) betting regulations. The 21-year-old acknowledged he had placed 484 bets on football matches over a span from June 30, 2020, to June 3, 2023, infringing on FA Rule E8.1.

An independent regulatory commission, after a hearing, decided on the penalties of suspension and a fine. Huddersfield Town has committed to supporting Harratt throughout his suspension. This season, Harratt has appeared in 16 games for Huddersfield Town, scoring two goals.

The FA disclosed that Harratt engaged in betting on matches that included not just Huddersfield Town but also Port Vale, Bradford City, and Guiseley AFC, even betting nine times (!) against his own team. His loan spells at Guiseley (October 2020 to June 2021), Port Vale (January to June 2022), and Bradford City (July to November 2022) coincided with some of these bets. His season-long loan to Bradford was cut short following his fine.

Harratt’s betting activities, according to the FA, jeopardized the game’s integrity, especially since some bets were placed on his club’s losses. However, the FA also noted that Harratt, being part of the Under-23 squad and not the first team for the nine relevant bets, minimized the impact on the game’s integrity.

The initial suspension was set at eight months by the committee, considering the volume of bets, the total amount wagered (£8,105.01), and Harratt’s awareness of the rules. However, factors like his age, lack of experience, immediate admission of guilt, expression of remorse, and a clean disciplinary record led to the reduction of his suspension to four months.

The four months penalty is considered by many too light for such big a breach of regulations, and it’s been touted as a complete “joke”.
