A promising start has been made by Kentucky’s excursion into regulated sports betting, with $4.5 million in wagers placed in the first two weeks after the state approved the activity. When mobile betting becomes available to citizens on Thursday, the momentum is anticipated to pick up dramatically.
Currently, sports fans may only place in-person bets, and Ellis Park is the only bookmaker in the Tri-State region. Since the introduction of sports betting earlier this month, the general manager of Ellis Park, Matt Pressley, noticed a noticeably increased level of activity.
“Once Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday hit, you definitely see the uptick and influx of people to the property,” Pressley remarked.
Andy Beshear, the governor of Kentucky, has high hopes for the money that legalized sports betting would bring in, projecting $23 million in the first year. This confidence results from the rapid success of sports betting and the excitement for the impending introduction of mobile betting. Notably, across the seven accessible apps, more than 60,000 people have already pre-registered.
They are Bet 365, Bet MGM, Barstool Sportsbook, Caesars, Draft Kings, FanDuel, and Fanatics.
Pressley admits that business at Ellis Park may slow down in the upcoming week, but he is still optimistic that the establishment has done enough to persuade visitors to come back for their wagering requirements.
“We’re pretty excited to see what it continues to do. We’re definitely seeing some steady trends with our numbers, so it’s been positive,” Pressley expressed.
The state’s “Problem Gambling Assistance Fund” will receive 2.5% of Kentucky’s gaming income in an effort to address any possible problems related to gambling.
