Kansas sports betting action has surged dramatically as the autumn sports season begins. With almost a quarter of a billion dollars wagered in September, the Kansas Lottery recently announced a significant increase in betting activity, indicating a robust recovery following the slower summer months.
A $100 million increase over the $147 million handle reported in August, Kansas sportsbooks recorded an amazing $248.8 million in total bets during September. This upsurge demonstrates how fall sports, particularly football, have sparked a renewed interest in betting throughout the entire state.
Even with the rise in wagering, Kansas bettors’ luck was not in their favor. The portion that sportsbooks retain after paying out winners is known as the hold rate, and it increased from 7.2% in August to 13.6% in September. As a result, operators’ net revenues increased to $18.3 million, almost triple their earnings from the previous month of $6.5 million. The state then used this windfall to collect $1.8 million in taxes.
DraftKings continues to dominate Kansas’s legal sports betting market, securing the top spot among operators. BetMGM also saw notable growth, with its online betting activity rising by 85% compared to August, while DraftKings saw a 76% increase. Together, these two operators captured the majority of the market share in September.
On the retail front, ESPN BET performed remarkably well, taking in $6.2 million in bets. This figure nearly doubled the combined handle of the other three retail sportsbooks, which reported a total of $2.8 million. However, ESPN BET’s retail handle was almost on par with its online action, indicating that the platform will need to bolster its online presence to stay competitive in Kansas, where most bets are placed digitally.
