The NFL season began in September 2024, and Delaware’s sports betting industry took off. The state saw its most prosperous sports betting month to date as a result of the rush of bettors placing wagers on events.
With a staggering handling of $23.2 million in September, the Delaware Lottery broke the previous record for the state and significantly outpaced the combined totals from July and August. With a 20.1% hold, revenue also reached an all-time high, with the state receiving close to $4.7 million.
Online betting played a significant role, contributing $19 million of the total handle, all facilitated by BetRivers, Delaware’s exclusive online operator. Bettors placed online wagers through the state’s three land-based casinos, with Delaware Park leading the way, handling $13 million in bets. Harrington followed with $4 million, and Bally’s Dover contributed $2.1 million.
Additionally, in-person wagers totaled $4.2 million, placed at the state’s retail sportsbooks: Moneyline Sports Bar & Lounge at Delaware Park, Murphy’s Race & Sports Book at Harrington Raceway & Casino, and Bally’s Dover Race & Sports Book.
Compared to the previous year, Delaware’s sports betting revenue skyrocketed, with a 202.7% increase over September 2023’s $1.5 million revenue. In 2023, Delaware’s total sports betting handle reached $65.3 million. However, 2024 has already seen $136.9 million wagered by September, more than doubling the previous year’s total.
The impressive September figures brought the 2025 fiscal year’s revenue to over $7.5 million, with notable gains in previous months, including $1.7 million in July and $1.1 million in August. Last year, the combined revenue for these three months was just $2.3 million.
