Sports betting and casino activity stayed strong in Iowa throughout May. The latest report from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission shows steady growth across both sectors, with internet betting continuing to lead the way.
Good to know
Compared to May last year, Iowa’s sports betting handle grew by around $20 million, showing an increase in participation. The total handle reached close to $202.6 million, with most of that activity—nearly $190.9 million—coming from online sportsbooks.
Net receipts from internet sports betting hit $18.9 million, while total sports betting net receipts for the month came to just under $20.1 million. Players walked away with approximately $182.5 million in winnings, and about $172 million of that came from bets placed online. Sports wagering brought in more than $1.4 million in taxes for the state in May.
Iowa casinos reported $149.5 million in adjusted gross revenue during May. Slot machines continued to dominate, contributing $135.6 million, while table games added $13.9 million. The tax contributions from casino operations totaled about $28.6 million to the state and roughly $700,000 in local taxes.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the federal ban on sports betting in May 2018, 38 states and Washington D.C. have launched legal sports betting markets. Iowa entered the market more than a year after the ruling and has since built a strong base of both retail and digital betting.
