Integrity Concerns Threaten Popularity of US Professional Sports

Share

Recent controversies in US professional sports have raised serious concerns about the integrity of the games. The suspension of Raptors’ forward Jontay Porter and the involvement of Ippei Mizuhara, the long-time interpreter of Japanese baseball star Shohei Ohtani, in a $17 million theft, have added to the worries. CNN has reported that these issues might diminish the appeal of US sports. They consulted two distinguished professors for their insights.

David Carter, an adjunct professor of management and organization at USC Marshall School of Business, explained to CNN, “Fans and consumers will put up with a lot when it comes to sports – just look at how the vast majority of off-field issues not affecting the integrity of the game tend to fade over time.” He highlighted the critical impact of integrity breaches, stating, “Matters affecting the integrity of the game have a chilling effect across the board and governing bodies know this is their Achilles heel.”

Andrew Zimbalist, an economics professor at Smith College, shed light on the ease of sports betting today. “You can bet on any game anywhere, professional or amateur, and not only on the game itself, but you can bet on the individual plays in the game. And you can do it from a smartphone just by pressing some buttons,” Zimbalist remarked.

The case of Jontay Porter, formerly a center for the Toronto Raptors, playing against the Denver Nuggets in March, and the arrest of a Brooklyn man in connection with an illegal betting scheme involving Porter, underscores the growing issue.

Zimbalist emphasized the risks posed by proposition betting, which focuses on specific parts or plays in a game. “There are many, many more ways in which gamblers can approach players and say, ‘Look, I don’t need your team to lose. All I need to do is have you not score any points in the first minute of the second half … then do whatever you want the rest of the game.'” He explained that athletes might feel safer engaging in such specific manipulations rather than throwing an entire game.

The crux of the concern is whether fans can trust what they are watching. “One of the reasons why people love sports is because of the uncertainty of the competition,” Zimbalist added. “The moment the idea comes in that this is really being rigged, it’s being fixed, it’s being manipulated, then the interest in the sport will decline.”

Days ago, NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum called for uniform federal gambling regulations to avoid further scrutiny affecting the US professional sports.
