Fresno State Players Under Investigation for Fantasy Sports Betting

Share

Two former men’s basketball players from Fresno State are being investigated for using daily fantasy sports (DFS) websites to wager on their own in-game performances. Mykell Robinson and Jalen Weaver are being investigated for possible infractions by the NCAA and the school, according to an ESPN report.

Weaver, who was recently cut off the team’s roster, acknowledged betting $50 on the DFS app Sleeper. In a game against New Mexico on December 31, he placed a wager on himself to score more than eleven points. Ultimately, Weaver scored 13 points in the Bulldogs’ 103-89 defeat. He said that he never placed a wager against Fresno State.

“I just made a bad decision, and I shouldn’t even have gotten involved with that,” Weaver told ESPN. “Now, I’m obviously paying for it. I bet on a game I played in, but I never tried to sabotage the season. I never bet on us to lose, never bet my unders.”

Robinson Allegedly Took the Unders on His Own Stats

Robinson allegedly wagered against himself, in contrast to Weaver. He bet on his own points and rebounds, taking the unders in DFS games, according to ESPN’s report. Furthermore, this season, at least one sportsbook saw odd betting activity on Robinson’s prop bets.

Weaver further asserted that text conversations he and Robinson exchanged about wagers were in the Fresno State athletic department. Weaver now intends to use the NCAA transfer site because his college future is uncertain.

There is more to the debate than just Robinson and Weaver. Last weekend, Zaon Collins, a third player, was also suspended for allegedly placing bets on professional sports. He is still included on the team’s roster, nevertheless.

Fresno State has struggled this season, holding a disappointing 5-23 record overall and a 1-16 standing in the Mountain West Conference. The school has yet to provide a detailed response, only stating that the players are sidelined while officials and the Mountain West Conference review an “eligibility matter.”

Notably, Fresno State’s betting scandal is separate from a federal investigation into a broader NBA and college basketball betting scheme.
