Flutter is exploring new opportunities in the United States as it keeps a close watch on the development of prediction markets. The company, through its FanDuel brand, is considering how to approach this growing space, though no firm plans have been announced yet.
Good to know
During the Q1 earnings call where $3.7 billion revenue was announced for the quarter, CEO Peter Jackson spoke about new pricing tools that could support more flexible betting formats. “We are really excited about our revolutionary outcome-based pricing technology that allows us to price an offer and an almost infinite amount of outcomes across the most relevant and immersive betting markets,” Jackson said.
He added that the company is “closely monitoring developments around futures markets and the potential for direct and indirect opportunities for FanDuel to explore.”
While Flutter has not made any commitments, Jackson confirmed that the evaluation process is ongoing. “We’re interested in the potential opportunity and we have brought some of our team who have some experience in building these products and services from the Betfair exchange to help us evaluate these opportunities.”
He noted that in states where regulation is still pending, prediction markets share some similarities with daily fantasy sports (DFS). “Clearly, in states that haven’t regulated… it’s not that dissimilar to the DFS stuff, albeit it, it’s worth remembering that DFS is a really good precursor to the parlay products, while prediction markets aren’t quite so limited.”
One area drawing interest is political forecasting. Activity picked up following the 2024 US presidential election, and recent legal updates may accelerate the trend. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) recently asked the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to approve a settlement in its case against Kalshi, a firm aiming to offer political event contracts.
Although the CFTC did not provide further details, approval could lead to broader acceptance of futures-style prediction platforms in the country.
