DraftKings is lining up for Alberta before betting even opens. The operator has started pre-registration and is aiming for a July 13 start, pending approval from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis Commission.
Good to Know
Alberta has not opened the doors yet, but DraftKings already wants a place in line. The Boston-based sportsbook and online casino operator said on Thursday that it plans to go live in the province when regulated wagering begins on July 13.
For now, the company is taking pre-registrations while it waits for licensing and regulatory approval from AGLC. So Alberta residents can create an account, but they still cannot deposit funds or place bets until launch day arrives.
DraftKings is not entering Canada from scratch. The company already operates in Ontario, still the only fully legalized online gaming jurisdiction in Canada at the moment. Alberta gives the brand another clear path for expansion in the country, and a practical one too.
Greg Karamitis, executive vice president and general manager of sports at DraftKings, said:
“We’re excited about the opportunity to expand DraftKings’ footprint in Canada and bring our online sportsbook and casino experiences to customers in Alberta. With the anticipated launch aligning with the World Cup – hosted right here in North America – it’s a particularly exciting moment for sports fans in the province to engage with our platform.”
DraftKings is also joining a list that already includes theScore Bet, Caesars, BetRivers, and PointsBet, all of which are allowing Alberta users to pre-register before the market opens.
