Colorado Voters Approve Proposition JJ to Secure Water Funding from Sports Betting Revenue

Voters in Colorado have strongly supported Proposition JJ, which permits the state to keep and use all sports betting tax income, even if it exceeds the $29 million threshold. This is a huge step for both sports betting and environmental conservation. The Denver Business Journal reported that, based on 63% of the ballots counted at the time, roughly 76% of voters supported the proposition. This new law guarantees that any money made beyond the threshold would go toward supporting important water conservation and protection programs throughout the state.

Support for Colorado’s Water Future

The approval of Proposition JJ marks a critical victory for Colorado’s long-term water security. Brian Jackson, Co-Chair of the Yes on JJ Campaign, expressed his satisfaction with the result, stating, “With Proposition JJ, we have secured a stable, sustainable funding source for the projects that safeguard our water for future generations.” He continued, “This is a victory for everyone who values Colorado and wants a resilient water future for our state.”

In addition to Jackson, Erin Karney, Co-Chair of the campaign and Executive VP of the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, highlighted the broader significance of the vote. “Together, we’ve taken a huge step forward in securing a water future that benefits all Coloradans and maintains our agricultural and outdoor heritage,” she remarked.

Colorado’s legal sports betting market, approved in 2019, has provided substantial tax revenue for the state. With this new provision in place, any surplus revenue from sports wagers will now play a key role in maintaining and improving Colorado’s water resources.

As the state continues to experience growth in sports betting revenue, Proposition JJ ensures that Colorado’s natural resources will receive much-needed financial support. Colorado joins a growing list of states that have embraced legal sports betting, as 38 states and the District of Columbia have followed suit since the U.S. Supreme Court lifted the federal ban on sports wagering in 2018.
