College Basketball Betting Ring Under Investigation After Suspicious Wagers Flagged Across States

Share

Authorities and sportsbooks are looking into a small gambling group that repeatedly placed winning bets against the same small-conference basketball teams during the 2024-25 college season, according to a report by ESPN’s David Purdum.

Good to Know

  • At least 11 college basketball games between December 2024 and January 2025 were flagged.
  • Nine sportsbooks in 13 U.S. states and one Canadian province detected the suspicious wagers.
  • The integrity firm IC360 first identified the unusual betting patterns.

Documents reviewed by ESPN revealed that the group made successful wagers on at least 11 games between December 1, 2024, and mid-January 2025. Their consistent wins raised concerns among operators, prompting alerts from IC360, a compliance and market-integrity monitoring company that tracks irregular betting behavior across regulated sportsbooks.

IC360’s system flagged the activity after noticing the group repeatedly placed large bets on first-half spreads, all targeting the same small-conference teams. The accounts used for the wagers often showed similar activity: dormant for weeks, suddenly active with high-value bets, and then silent again.

The flagged wagers were reported by nine sportsbooks operating in 13 U.S. states and one Canadian province, highlighting the network’s reach. Similar betting patterns tied to the same individuals were also documented during the 2023-24 college basketball season, according to operator reports.

One sportsbook told ESPN that several bettors appeared connected to Marves Fairley, described in reports as “the main syndicate suspect.” Fairley, who sells betting picks online, denied any wrongdoing when contacted by ESPN.

Investigators are now reviewing whether the group had access to insider information or simply exploited a statistical weakness in smaller college programs. Sportsbook operators continue to collaborate with IC360 and gaming regulators to determine if any rules or state laws were violated.
