Brazil Experiences 360% Growth in Sports Betting, Dominates Soccer Sponsorships

While discussion on sports betting regulation is ongoing, soccer, Brazil’s crown jewel, is making headlines. A new report shows that an astonishing 95% of teams in the A Series of the Brazilian Championship now find their jerseys adorned with logos from the nation’s burgeoning sports betting sector. But how did we arrive here?

Datahub’s recent analytics bring some clarity. In just two years, from 2020 to 2022, the number of registered betting companies in Brazil leaped from 51 to 239. That’s an eye-catching 360% growth.

The interconnectedness between soccer and this industry isn’t merely surface-level branding. Marcos Sabiá, the captain at the helm of Galera.bet, elucidates, “We are aware that the sports betting segment is an important part of the sports scene… fostering essential values to promote the sport with responsibility and integrity.”

A ripple effect of this betting boom is the enhanced financial muscle for soccer clubs. “The significant growth of the betting segment… provides a new and strong source of revenue for the teams, aiding in infrastructure investments and player acquisition,” says Cristiano Maschio of Qesh. Clubs such as Flamengo and Palmeiras, to name a couple, enjoy such benefits.

Yet, not everything is rosy. The Brazilian Senate currently mulls over Bill 3626/23, a legislation concerning sports betting. Stakeholders are on edge, contemplating the bill’s ramifications. A potential licensing fee of BRL 30 million, combined with an 18% operational tariff, might not bode well for fresh investments.

Echoing this sentiment, Fábio Wolff, a voice from the sports marketing realm, observes, “The betting sector invests the most in the country’s popular sport. Revenues from this, if managed astutely by clubs, can be a goldmine.”
