Bowyer Begins One-Year Federal Sentence

Veteran bookmaker and high-stakes gambler Matthew Bowyer has reported to a federal prison in Lompoc, California, to begin serving a one-year sentence for operating one of the country’s largest illegal gambling enterprises.

Good to Know

  • Bowyer handled around $325 million in wagers from former Shohei Ohtani interpreter Ippei Mizuhara.
  • He reported to FCI Lompoc, a minimum-security prison northwest of Santa Barbara.
  • Bowyer already paid $1.5 million in restitution but still owes additional back taxes.

Bowyer arrived at the Federal Correctional Institution in Lompoc by noon on Friday, meeting the surrender deadline set by the court. His attorney, Diane Bass, confirmed that he will serve approximately one year behind bars. The sentencing came after U.S. District Judge John W. Holcomb found him guilty of running an illegal gambling operation, providing false tax information, and engaging in money laundering.

The 50-year-old bookmaker became widely known for his connection to Ippei Mizuhara, the former interpreter of baseball star Shohei Ohtani. Prosecutors revealed that Mizuhara placed roughly $325 million in bets through Bowyer, embezzling nearly $17 million from Ohtani to pay off his debts. Ohtani was cleared of any involvement by both federal investigators and Major League Baseball.

From Vegas High Roller to Federal Inmate

Bowyer, once a familiar figure in Las Vegas casinos, claimed he received more than $150 million in complimentary perks from Strip resorts over three decades. His new surroundings, however, are far from the luxury suites and high-limit tables he once frequented.

Before reporting to prison, Bowyer documented his final moments of freedom with an Instagram video filmed from his car. “Obviously, anxiety is high, I’m going to go in there with my head held high,” he said. “I’m proud of what I built, I’m proud of everything I accomplished in life.”

Following his August sentencing, Bowyer launched a full-scale media campaign to promote his book Recalibrate, which he described as a personal reflection and recovery effort. Over 45 days, he appeared on nearly 100 podcasts and several national news programs, often discussing his past and the consequences of his actions.

Sentence Shorter Than Expected

Federal prosecutors had asked for a prison term between 15 and 21 months, while a probation officer recommended three years. Judge Holcomb ultimately imposed a one-year term after Bowyer paid restitution and accepted responsibility. Prosecutors noted that Bowyer still owes back taxes due to false statements previously made to the Internal Revenue Service.

The punishment was far lighter than the 57-month sentence given to Mizuhara earlier this year. Mizuhara is currently serving time in Pennsylvania after pleading guilty to embezzling Ohtani’s money to fund his gambling addiction.
