BGC’s Grand National Charity Bet as They Race Towards Positive Change

Share

The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) marked another successful year of its annual Grand National charity betting endeavor, raising a commendable sum exceeding £15,000 for various charitable endeavors.

In a heartening display of support, more than 50 parliamentarians participated by placing charity bets on the Grand National event, hosted by the UK’s leading betting operators. The stakes were high, with all winnings generously directed towards the MPs’ chosen charities.

Victory and Generosity

The much-anticipated event saw the 7/1 favorite, I am Maximus, clinching victory under the skillful guidance of jockey Paul Townend, owned by JP McManus and trained by the esteemed Willie Mullins. Notably, Mullins tasted Grand National success once again, nine years after Hedge Hunter’s triumph in 2015.

Among the fortunate parliamentarians who backed the winning horse were Christian Wakeford MP, Maria Caulfield MP, Justin Tomlinson MP, and others, each contributing to the charitable cause. Even those whose bets didn’t emerge victorious, like Bob Blackman MP, demonstrated their philanthropic spirit, with their nominated charities still receiving support.

The charitable donations were directed towards diverse causes, ranging from Sir Jackie Stewart’s Race for Dementia to The Fed, a social care charity for the Greater Manchester Jewish Community. Notable personalities like Sir Alok Sharma and Dame Caroline Nokes, alongside Scotland Minister John Lamont, actively participated in the initiative.

In addition to the charitable aspect, MPs also had the opportunity to learn about the array of safer gambling measures implemented by bookmakers, underscoring the industry’s commitment to responsible gaming practices.

The combined contributions from BGC members, encompassing both industry giants like William Hill and smaller entities, amounted to a significant £15,115, reaffirming the sector’s dedication to social responsibility. Since its establishment in 2019, BGC members have collectively raised over £6 million for charitable causes, underscoring their enduring commitment to societal well-being.

Michael Dugher, the BGC’s chief executive, expressed gratitude to the participants and industry stakeholders for their unwavering support, emphasizing the integral role of initiatives like the Grand National charity betting in fostering a culture of giving back.
