In the 2023/2024 season, the American Gaming Association’s survey reveals a 60% rise in Americans betting on NFL games, with numbers referenced by CNBC. A staggering 73 million individuals are set to wager on the NFL, a significant leap from the previous year’s 46 million.
Several factors contribute to this upward trend. Firstly, more states have legalized sports betting, leading to greater awareness and accessibility. As the NFL season kicks off, 37 states along with Washington, D.C. have given the green light to gambling. But those lagging aren’t far behind, seeking to join the bandwagon soon.
The NFL’s enduring appeal is evident, with gambling companies even setting up booths in stadiums. The sport’s vast popularity, combined with the surge in betting avenues, makes it one of the most betted-on sports in the nation.
Online platforms are dominating the betting scene with 35.1 million people expected to place their bets virtually. In contrast, about 13.6 million are looking to opt for physical sportsbooks. Given this trajectory, sportsbooks are predicting one of their most lucrative years, setting the stage for potential expansion as more American regions open up to betting.
However, not all NFL fans are jumping into the betting arena wagering on markets such as total season wins. According to the AGA, only 37% of NFL enthusiasts are placing their bets. Whether this statistic will see a rise or decline in the coming year remains a topic of debate, especially if some punters don’t find the betting experience worthwhile.
AGA’s CEO, Bill Miller, remarks on the burgeoning interest: “The sustained interest in NFL wagering reflects the growth and continued maturation of legal sports betting across the country. Consumers clearly want legal sports betting options and understand the regulated industry’s foundational commitments to responsibility.”
To keep the momentum, sportsbooks are upping their game. With revamped mobile apps, enticing promotions, fantasy games, and a slew of free games, they aim to keep bettors engaged. This strategy ensures that, at least for another season, the NFL betting scene will remain vibrant.
