A Record 50 Million Americans to Wager $16 Billion on Super Bowl LVII

According to the American Gaming Association’s (AGA) most recent study, Super Bowl LVII will once again be the sporting event of the year, with 50.4 million American adults (20%) estimated to bet on the winner of the NFL championship game. This goal establishes a new betting record, since the amount of projected wagers this year is 61 percent more than the previous record established in 2022. Americans will spend an estimated $16 billion on the 2023 Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, more than double predictions from last year.

According to AGA, the number of conventional Super Bowl wagers is likely to exceed casual betting for the first time ever due to the rise of legal sports betting. According to the poll, almost 30 million American people are likely to put traditional bets online, a 66 percent rise over the previous year, while approximately 28 million prefer casual wagers, a 50 percent increase over 2022. These results indisputably demonstrate the growing popularity of sports betting among American adults.

The rising use of sports wagering operator services and facilities may be related to the development of regulated sports betting activities. Legalized sports betting increases interest in sporting events, such as the premium NFL event on February 12. More than 34% of NFL fans agreed that the ability to place a bet with a licensed operator adds security and excitement to the NFL championship game.

Bill Miller, AGA President and CEO, said:

“Every year, the Super Bowl serves to highlight the benefits of legal sports betting: bettors are transitioning to the protections of the regulated market, leagues, and sports media are seeing increased engagement, and legal operators are driving needed tax revenue to states across the country.”
