YouTube Gambling Scams in Brazil Prompt Investigation by Ministry of Sports

The National Secretariat for Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sports (SNAEDE) has uncovered alarming irregularities related to gambling promotions on YouTube. The investigation, initiated by the Ministry of Sports, identified 53 accounts and 25 channels that were actively encouraging illegal gambling. These channels claimed to offer easy profits, attracting over 100,000 viewers per broadcast.

Fraudulent Websites and Influencers Targeting Vulnerable Viewers

The investigation revealed that several of these gambling-related channels were promoting websites that deceived viewers by offering promised payouts, which were never fulfilled. In some cases, influencers were believed to have been paid by these gambling sites to market their platforms, with the promise of easy financial gains for viewers. However, once these websites received enough bets, they were deactivated, leaving players without their promised rewards.

This practice raised serious concerns over the security of users and the transparency of the gambling industry. Sports Minister André Fufuca emphasized the scale of the issue, saying, “We are talking about thousands of Brazilians who, deceived by promises of easy money, end up being victims of fraud.” He called for tighter regulation of sports betting to ensure both transparency and the protection of the public.

In response to the findings, the Ministry of Sports has formally requested assistance from the Ministry of Justice to further investigate the matter. There is a strong possibility that the Federal Police will be involved in identifying and prosecuting those responsible for these fraudulent activities. Giovanni Rocco, the Secretary of Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sports, condemned the deceptive actions, stating, “These sites hide behind social media platforms to carry out scams. They deceive people through influencers, promising quick gains and money to pay bills, go to the grocery store, supplement their income. But this is not gambling; it is a crime against the popular economy.”

The Ministry’s request for federal intervention underscores the seriousness of the issue, as it seeks to bring an end to these fraudulent practices and safeguard vulnerable populations from further exploitation.
