With more bets being put on the Women’s World Cup than on previous editions, British bookmakers have seen a dramatic change in the landscape of sports betting. While betting volumes have decreased compared to the European Championship last year due to the schedule of the games, industry leaders have noticed a noticeable increase in interest.
William Hill, a prominent player in the world of sports betting, revealed that approximately 900,000 bets have been placed on the ongoing Women’s World Cup, a premier event in women’s sports, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Despite a potential dip in quantity due to the morning kick-off times, Lee Phelps, spokesperson for William Hill, noted that the current engagement surpasses expectations from a few years ago.
The proprietor of well-known companies Ladbrokes and Coral, Entain, voiced similar thoughts. Betting on the Women’s World Cup has experienced “exponential growth,” and there has been a striking rise in the proportion of women betting internationally. The advent of new ways for fans to support their teams, such as betting, is increasingly important to fan involvement.
Betting on Australia, the co-host country and their run to the semifinals saw a startling 200% increase in involvement, partly due to the Matildas’ outstanding performance.
Soccer has had the strongest growth in the women’s sports betting industry. According to a German Sport University Cologne report released in July, soccer will have a 20% yearly market growth rate starting in 2020. The report also noted that the number of female gamblers on women’s soccer has doubled every year.
The European Championship from last year was crucial for both Flutter and Entain. Women’s sports have become a profitable market for bookmakers and the gambling sector, attracting interest and participation in hitherto unexplored areas.
While Entain did not immediately provide details on the amount of wagers put on the Women’s World Cup, the record-breaking 1.5 million online wagers placed on the Euros the year prior highlight the growing popularity of women’s sports betting.
