Virginia Sports Betting Handle Climbs to $416.7 Million in August

The August sports wagering report from the Virginia Lottery is now available, and it features some impressive stats for the state’s gaming industry. Players wagered close to $416.7 million over the month, a whopping 30.6% rise over the same period last year. This increase is indicative of the state’s rising interest in sports betting.

Winnings and Revenue Breakdown

In August, Virginia bettors collectively won about $376.5 million. A substantial portion of these winnings—approximately $375 million—came from online wagers, while retail casinos contributed nearly $1.5 million to the total. This trend emphasizes the rising popularity of mobile sports betting in the state.

Adjusted gross revenue (AGR) for sports betting in Virginia reached nearly $35 million for August. Mobile operators generated about $34.5 million of this revenue, while retail locations accounted for close to $0.5 million. This distribution illustrates the dominant role of online platforms in the state’s gambling market.

In terms of tax revenue, the state collected $5.2 million from sports betting activities. Of this amount, approximately $5.1 million went to Virginia’s general fund, with the remainder directed to support services for problem gambling. The Virginia Lottery clarified the allocation of these funds, stating, “Of the state tax on sports betting AGR, the statute specifies 97.5% is to be deposited in the state’s General Fund and 2.5% is to be deposited into the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund administered by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.”

There are three casinos in Virginia right now, which helps the state’s gambling economy grow. The newest, Caesars Virginia, has been greeting guests for more than a year. The other two casinos in the state, HR Bristol and Rivers Casino Portsmouth, both opened more over two years ago.
