As Governor Phil Scott readies to enact H.127, Vermont is about to add its name to the expanding list of states that have legalized online sports betting. The governor’s desk has not yet received the legislation, though, according to his spokesperson.
Press Secretary Jason Maulucci said the governor would sign the law about five days after receiving it, anticipating its delivery in the next week or so.
H.127, which was approved by the Vermont legislature earlier this month, despite being one of the smallest in terms of population, will make Vermont the 38th state to legalize sports betting.
The Department of Liquor and Lottery will be in charge of regulating Vermont sports betting under the new law. The agency will choose two to six operators for mobile sportsbooks through a competitive bidding process, with the option of choosing none if the submissions don’t fulfil the criteria.
Governor Scott has consistently backed sports betting, and his administration continues to be supportive of H. 127. Jason Maulucci highlighted the governor’s conviction that allowing sports betting will safeguard customers and bring about much-needed regulation.
Governor Scott has fought for legalization for more than three years, and he is pleased that the legislature has finally acted in light of the fact that many Vermonters currently partake in the sports betting industry.
With the governor’s signature soon to follow, Vermont is about to formally accept online sports betting. The introduction of the legislation represents a significant advancement for the state, which aspires to provide a secure and regulated environment for fans of sports betting.
Operators in the industry are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to break into this attractive market as Vermont joins the list of states embracing legalized sports betting.
