UK Parliamentary Committee Urges Stricter Measures on Sports Betting Ads in Premier League

Increased controls against the spread of legal sports betting and gaming ads in the English Premier League are being pushed by a parliamentary committee in the United Kingdom. The Premier League’s intention to gradually remove gambling advertisements off the front of match jerseys by the conclusion of the 2025–2026 season is considered inadequate, according to a recent report by the Culture, Media, and Sport Committee.

The bipartisan committee says that a new code of conduct for the Premier League and other British sports leagues is necessary, but it does not advocate for a complete ban. In addition to banning advertisements within the stadium, this suggested code will highlight messages about responsible gaming. Dame Caroline Dinenage, the chair of the committee, stressed the need for further protection against what might seem like an excessive barrage of advertisements during football and other sporting events, especially for kids and people who have a history of problem gambling.

Study Findings and Premier League Response

Only 7% of visible advertisements from the jerseys of the 10 games under investigation were the subject of the committee’s investigation on the frequency of gambling advertisements. Nevertheless, in the first week of the campaign, six matches included an astounding 7,000 gambling commercials. In response to the committee’s findings, the Premier League stated that it continues to work with other sports organizations and the government to create a new code for sponsorship of responsible gambling while also reaffirming its compliance with all gaming laws.

Even though the Premier League made an estimated £60 million in sales to soccer betting companies last season, it wants to conform to changing regulations. The committee’s endorsement of the choice to eliminate front-of-shirt advertisements in April is indicative of a broader push for greater accountability and openness in the field of sports betting advertising.
