A major match-fixing incident led to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) calling a meeting to discuss issues around betting on Chinese soccer matches. This choice was made in response to serious concerns about the matches’ integrity voiced by a thorough investigation published by US Integrity.
Sports Wagering Operations Manager Andrew Steffen provided important information from a two-year US Integrity probe during the MGC conference. The study revealed concerning results: It is said that 41 club teams and 120 matches were manipulated. Although US Integrity stated that the investigation is still ongoing, it encompassed several levels of the Chinese men’s league as well as the top division of the women’s league.
According to Steffen, as of the meeting, Massachusetts mobile operators were still permitted to offer bets on Chinese Super League (CSL) matches. However, he recommended a precautionary suspension of all matches overseen by the Chinese Football Association (CFA) until the investigation concludes.
Following Steffen’s recommendation, Interim Chair Jordan Maynard and the commissioners engaged in a brief discussion. They agreed on the importance of maintaining betting integrity and decided to act accordingly. The commission voted unanimously to temporarily suspend wagering on CFA matches. This measure aims to safeguard the interests of bettors in Massachusetts while the investigation is still in progress.
The MGC hasn’t decided to take these matches out of the betting catalog permanently just yet. Before taking any more action, the commission will wait to hear from US Integrity regarding the investigation’s final findings.
In January 2023, Massachusetts legalized retail sports betting after passing legislation in August of the previous year. In March 2023, the state then added internet platforms to its sports betting sector. The temporary suspension demonstrates the state’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its sports betting ecosystem while the MGC keeps an eye on the matter.
