Suspicious betting patterns are still a problem in the complex world of sports integrity, according to information released by SIS, a well-known provider of sports data and content. A thorough investigation covering the first half of 2023 by SIS revealed a total of 79 games that raised questions, or 0.48% of the 16,336 games that were closely examined.
The classification of a game as “suspicious” results from the observation of odd betting patterns that may point to match-fixing. These results highlight the enduring existence of this difficulty, even though there were fewer flagged matches than in the same time of 2022 (84).
Delving into the geographical distribution of these flagged matches, it’s evident that suspicions span the globe:
The fact that leagues below the top division, which are frequently distinguished by poorer funding, accounted for a significant 61% of all alerts during the first half of the year is remarkable. This highlights the leagues’ vulnerability and the requirement for more caution.
Amidst the collection of flagged matches, a distinct array of game categories emerged:
Affy Sheikh, the head of SIS, emphasized the urgent necessity for cooperation among anti-corruption parties in saying, “Ongoing efforts and stronger collaboration are required to tackle this persistent problem in the beautiful game.” Sheikh’s remarks highlight the seriousness of the problem, which calls for a combination of tools, methods, and perceptions.
The analysis also unveiled a focus on specific betting markets:
The opportunities for match manipulation are expanding, and Affy Sheikh observed, “This highlights the variety of markets in which attempts at match manipulation may occur.” The specificity of these data demonstrates how adaptable individuals attempting to erode the fairness of the sporting environment are.
These figures were released soon after SIS introduced the Komodo online integrity alert system in March. Komodo, which was created to assist sports regulatory bodies and law enforcement organizations, identifies suspicious matches and provides thorough analysis of betting market activity and on-field performance. While initially concentrating on football, it is anxiously anticipated that Komodo’s scope would be extended to encompass other sports, such as cricket.
