Tennis player Cortes has made a startling admission: he admitted to 35 infractions of the ITIA Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP). This admission throws light on his unlawful activities from 2016 to 2018.
Cortes is charged with tampering with match results, taking bribes to sway outcomes, and failing to disclose dishonest solicitations. In addition, Cortes is suspected of offering financial incentives to tournament officials in exchange for favorable treatment, and the ITIA has discovered proof of Cortes participating in tennis betting.
The athlete, 29, acknowledged the gravity of the accusations and cooperated fully with the ITIA’s investigation. By choosing to be transparent, Cortes gave up his right to a hearing before an unbiased anti-corruption adjudication and accepted the stipulated penalty without protest.
Cortes is subject to a suspension that will last from March 27, 2024, until March 26, 2039, as a result of his crimes. Furthermore, a considerable punishment of $75,000 has been assessed against him, with a major chunk of it deferred until the terms specified are met.
Cortes is not allowed to take part in any event sponsored or managed by national federations or ITIA affiliates in any capacity throughout the term of his ban, including as a coach, player, or spectator. This severe sanction works as a deterrence for future transgressions within the tennis community and highlights the seriousness of Cortes’s wrongdoing.
