A sixth arrest has been made in the ongoing investigation into a sports betting scandal involving former NBA player Jontay Porter. Authorities charged Shane Hennen with wire fraud conspiracy after his arrest at Las Vegas airport while attempting to board a flight to Panama.
The investigation revealed a text message allegedly sent by Porter. In it, he reportedly outlined how he planned to bench himself during a January 2024 game, which could have influenced prop bets placed on his performance. This development follows earlier reports of unusual betting activity flagged by DraftKings Sportsbook.
Porter, who previously played center for the Toronto Raptors, became the focus of the NBA’s probe into betting irregularities last spring. DraftKings identified specific prop bets on Porter in two games that stood out due to abnormal betting patterns. On January 26, bets placed on Porter scoring fewer three-pointers yielded the highest profits among all NBA prop bets that day. Similarly, March 20 saw another wave of successful wagers tied to Porter’s performance.
On both dates, Porter’s game time was notably short. He played just four minutes on January 26 without attempting a single three-pointer. In the March 20 game, he exited after three minutes due to illness, failing to score any points. In contrast, his average playing time during games typically hovered around 14 minutes.
Hennen, who was arraigned earlier this week, has been released without bail as the case continues. The investigation into the scandal underscores concerns about the integrity of sports betting and its potential impact on professional athletes and games.
