Today is the day that Sandro Tonali, the well-known Italian midfielder for Newcastle, will finally take the pitch again. On Tuesday, the Italian soccer association formally lifted his 10-month suspension, which marked a major turning point in his career.
Tonali’s admission in October of breaking betting rules was the reason for the ban. This information was made public soon after he moved to Newcastle, where he had appeared in very few games. Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle, stated that Tonali is back and prepared to carry on with his professional soccer career despite the setback.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe shared insights into Tonali’s mindset and physical condition following the lengthy suspension. “He’s fitter than he was when the ban was imposed,” Howe noted, emphasizing that Tonali has worked hard to stay in top shape. However, Howe also pointed out that while Tonali is physically fit, he still needs to regain match fitness, which can only come from playing in competitive games.
Howe acknowledged the potential scrutiny Tonali might face due to his recent ban but expressed confidence in the player’s ability to overcome it. “We expect him to be himself and play his game,” Howe stated, showing full support for the midfielder’s return to the pitch.
Earlier this year, Tonali also faced a suspended two-month ban from the Football Association (FA) related to gambling violations. The FA clarified that this ban would only be enforced if Tonali were to commit another violation before the end of the 2024-25 season. The midfielder avoided a harsher penalty due to his proactive approach in self-reporting and cooperating with the FA.
Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, revealed that the player was dealing with a gambling problem around the time he received his suspension. During discussions with the Italian federation, Tonali agreed to undergo therapy to address his gambling addiction, demonstrating his commitment to recovery.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed optimism about Tonali’s return, predicting that the player will experience a range of emotions as he steps back onto the field. “When you have a long period of time out, you have a lot of time to think, analyze, and reflect,” Howe said. He believes Tonali has done all the necessary work off the field and is now ready to focus on what he loves most—playing soccer.
