The Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali will serve a 10-month suspension from football as a result of infractions involving wagering on Italian sporting events. This penalty action against Tonali has been validated by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). Apart from the prohibition, Tonali will also be required to attend treatment programs intended for people with gambling addiction and take part in a sequence of talks concerning his own experiences that will last for eight months.
The 23-year-old Italian midfielder, who most recently moved from AC Milan to Newcastle, is at the core of a big Italian football betting controversy. It was discovered that Tonali was a gambler, and he had wagered on games featuring AC Milan, his old team. He became the most expensive Italian footballer in history with his £56 million ($67.7 million) move to Newcastle.
Giuseppe Riso, his agent, came clean about Tonali’s gambling addiction. In reality, Tonali acknowledged that throughout his time with Brescia and AC Milan, he wagered on both teams.
The investigation by Turin prosecutors, which exposed Italian football players’ use of unapproved websites for game betting, prompted the FIGC to take action.
In a deal with the FIGC, Nicolo Fagioli, a midfielder for Juventus, also accepted a seven-month suspension after confessing to problems with gambling.
Tonali’s suspension has not yet been addressed by Newcastle United. He made an appearance as a substitute in their most recent Champions League game, a 1-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund at home.
The manager of Newcastle, Eddie Howe, expressed the club’s resolute backing for Tonali and emphasized their dedication to helping him overcome the obstacles he faces. Tonali has been a member of their squad for a long time, according to Howe.
FIGC President Gabriele Gravina supported the use of plea deals as a means of accelerating legal procedures and reducing the possibility of more severe punishments. He underlined that all parties concerned must cooperate and follow the set guidelines.
As the Premier League team said last week, Nicolo Zaniolo, the Italian midfielder for Aston Villa, is also cooperating with the authorities in their continuing investigation into purportedly illicit betting operations.
These events highlight how important honesty and diligence are in the professional football industry. Football clubs and regulating organizations have a great deal of difficulty when it comes to gambling-related concerns.
