Pennsylvania Sees 1,000-Unit Decline Since 2021, Report Shows

The gaming scene in Pennsylvania, a state known for its booming casino sector, is undergoing a big change. The state offers everything, from traditional casino games to the perennially popular bingo, lottery, and sports betting. However, a new pattern is starting to emerge, where skill games are taking over gas stations, convenience stores, and pubs across the state and changing the gaming landscape.

According to a recent assessment by Spectrum Gaming Group, an independent consulting firm with expertise in the gaming industry, Pennsylvania has seen a decline in slot machines of about 1,000 over the previous several years. At Mohegan Pennsylvania, the decrease of 120 slots was allowed by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB). Lady Luck Nemacolin and Hollywood Casino Morgantown eliminated 100 and 30 slots, respectively, earlier this year. In addition to the 563 slot machines that Harrah’s Philadelphia will retire in 2021, 150 slots will be eliminated this year. Since 2021, almost 1,000 machines have had their slots eliminated in total.

Resilience Amid Slot Reduction

The PGCB’s 2022–2023 Annual Report emphasizes the state’s strong and responsible expansion in the gaming industry, despite the decline of slot machines. With a wide range of services, such as online betting, fantasy sports, online gambling platforms, and 17 physical locations, Pennsylvania’s gambling industry generated more than $5 billion in revenue in 2017, surpassing that of its rival New Jersey.

There are a number of reasons behind Pennsylvania’s declining retail slot density. The transition to online gambling platforms was hastened by the epidemic, and the pattern has continued even as the virus has subsided. Additionally, the expanding iGaming market has a negative influence on retail slots as 13,000 slot machines’ worth of games are now accessible online.

Furthermore, competition from nearby states is fierce in Pennsylvania. The attractiveness of other gaming alternatives, such as skill games, has influenced how the state’s gaming sector has changed over time.

The demise of slot machines has been greatly impacted by the emergence of skill games. Skill games have quickly spread throughout Pennsylvania, finding a place in many companies, even as legislators continue to debate their future.
