Ronald Rychlak, a law professor at the University of Mississippi, has been selected by Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann to serve on the state’s first task group on mobile and internet sports betting. This action was taken after House Bill 606, which was passed in March and required the creation of a 13-member task group to look into the difficulties and ramifications of allowing mobile-online sports betting in Mississippi.
David Blount, the head of the Senate Gaming Committee, invited Rychlak, a well-known legal scholar and co-author of “Gaming and Gambling Law: Cases, Materials, and Problems,” to join the committee under Hosemann’s direction.
Rychlak stressed the significance of being cautious, despite the fact that allowing mobile sports betting in Mississippi might have significant economic advantages. He emphasized that in order to protect vulnerable groups like children and college athletes, the current measures must be preserved.
“One of the things I spoke to is when and if we go to an online-based betting that those protections that we have in place must remain so that we won’t put kids in jeopardy,” cautioned Rychlak.
Rychlak also pointed out the heightened risks of threats and bribery to athletes as sports betting becomes more prevalent, noting, “You increase the risk exponentially of threats and bribes to athletes.”
Mississippi now only allows geofenced mobile betting inside of casinos and in-person sports betting outside of casinos. Casino owners are concerned about possible effects on their business models from the potential development of internet sports betting. It may, however, also offer a chance to draw in new clients.
The task team, which met in September, has until December 15 to deliver a thorough report for the general public. The task group chairs have stated that they anticipate a legislative proposal to be presented during the forthcoming session, highlighting the necessity of addressing important factors.
The road to legalizing online sports betting in Mississippi remains difficult despite continuous negotiations, with moral and religious objections to gambling playing a big part. States that currently permit mobile sports betting have seen a spike in gambling addiction reports, particularly among young males between the ages of 18 and 35.
Rychlak drew attention to the fact that some locals already wager on sports illegally or in other states. He also expressed concern over the possibility of dangerous conduct among young individuals as a result of their access to gambling apps.
Mississippi is following other states that initially did thorough investigations before moving toward allowing sports betting while the discussion is still ongoing. The goal of these discussions is to achieve a balance between the wellbeing of the state’s citizens and economic prospects.
