The sports betting data for May was made public by the Ohio Casino Control Commission, and it shows a marked increase in betting activity from both retail and online operators.
In May, Ohio’s total betting handle was $611.6 million, up 37% from the same month the prior year. Events like the Cleveland Cavaliers’ run in the NBA playoffs and the Cleveland Guardians’ and Cincinnati Reds’ current MLB seasons had a big impact.
With a handle of $595.2 million, online operators were in the lead, followed by retail operators with a handle of $16.4 million and revenue of little over $1.2 million. With over $313,000 in retail revenue, MGM Northfield Park was the leader.
Gross gaming revenue in Ohio rose 16.4% year-over-year to $67.4 million, with online platforms generating 98% of this figure. FanDuel emerged as the top online operator, reporting $30.6 million in revenue for May.
DraftKings followed with $20.1 million in revenue but led in total handle wagered at $204 million, slightly surpassing FanDuel’s $199.8 million.
Overall, online operators paid out $523.2 million in winnings for May, while retail operators paid out just over $15 million to bettors.
Ohio’s sports betting regulations currently prohibit deducting promotional spend until 2027. Starting from then, the law allows a 10% deduction of promotional spend, increasing to 20% in 2032.
