The Ban Gambling on Elections Act, a bill to ban betting on US elections, was introduced by Representatives Jamie Raskin and Andrea Salinas on December 18. Growing worries about how election-related gambling affects election integrity and public confidence in the democratic process are addressed by this measure.
The proposed measure aims to expressly forbid election betting by amending the Commodity Exchange Act. It is regarded as the House version of Senator Jeff Merkley’s Senate measure, with the goal of preventing outside interference from influencing election results.
Rep. Jamie Raskin expressed his concerns about the implications of election betting on democracy, stating that “democracy relies on transparency and trust in the voting process.” He emphasized that turning elections into a profit-driven gamble undermines public confidence. According to Raskin, when betting odds become a factor, it creates a system that clouds the integrity of the democratic process.
Rep. Andrea Salinas joined Raskin in highlighting the risks posed by election betting. She warned that such betting could incentivize interference or manipulation of elections. Salinas also noted that the growing prevalence of gambling addiction presents another societal challenge, one that is exacerbated by the potential for election betting.
“Elections betting sets a dangerous precedent, incentivizing bad actors to try and influence or interfere with our elections systems. We cannot play roulette with our democracy by allowing this kind of wagering without a thorough accounting of the potential consequences,” Salinas added.
The proposed bill aims to curb these risks by explicitly banning election betting, thereby preserving the integrity of the electoral system and protecting democracy.
