Nebraska Regulator Rejects Calls for New Racetracks

In a recent development, the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission has issued a comprehensive report addressing the potential expansion of horseracing tracks across the state. Contrary to expectations, the regulator asserted that Nebraska “has no need for additional horseracing tracks beyond the ones already licensed.”

According to the commission’s findings, there is ample capacity within the existing six licensed horseracing tracks to accommodate a significant increase in racing activities. The report explicitly states that “the data does not support the addition of more racing licenses,” effectively challenging the necessity of expanding the current horseracing landscape.

The Fremont Tribune highlighted the potential ramifications of this stance, suggesting that the commission’s report might pose challenges for new tracks seeking state licensing, particularly those intertwined with casino developments. Notably, WarHorse Casino, currently in the construction phase, and the proposed Bellevue racetrack casino could face hurdles in their licensing endeavors.

The commission’s scrutiny extended to the economic impact of the proposed Bellevue racetrack casino. Despite acknowledging that the facility’s opening would “boost the projected overall gambling revenue in the state,” the commission remains steadfast in its position against the issuance of additional racing licenses.

A local report revealed that only one of the six existing tracks in Nebraska offers a full racing schedule. Fonner Park in Grand Island led the pack with 42 race days in the past year. The commission’s report shed light on the fact that, collectively, the six Nebraska tracks hosted 53 race days in 2022.

Commission Chairman Denny Lee addressed the report’s status, clarifying that it is a “draft that could be amended or supplemented in the future.” Lee expressed confidence that the report would feature prominently on the next commission meeting agenda, scheduled for January 19. As commissioners delve into the details, the horseracing landscape in Nebraska stands at a crossroads, awaiting a verdict on its potential expansion.
