NCAA Adopts Revised Penalties for Student-Athlete Gambling

Share

The NCAA has announced major changes to the sanctions imposed on student-athletes found wagering on college sports, including those at their own institutions, in response to concerns expressed by the Collegiate Commissioners Association. This action attempts to maintain the integrity of collegiate athletics while addressing the pervasive problem of sports gambling among college students.

Student-athletes who wagered on their own teams or on other sports sponsored by their institutions risked permanent disqualification under the previous regulations, which were put out in June and were harshly condemned. The updated rules show a more thoughtful approach to reforming penalties.

Student-athletes who are caught betting on teams at their school—aside from their own squad—will now be suspended for one season and will lose their eligibility for one year. In order to be reinstated, they will also need to complete preventive education and sports wagering guidelines. The Division I Council Coordination Committee supported this judgment, recognizing that reinstatement requirements should be modified for some sports betting-related situations.

A Nuanced Approach to Student-Athlete Mistakes

Jon Steinbrecher, chair of the Council Coordination Committee and commissioner of the Mid-American Conference, emphasized the NCAA’s stance: “To be clear, Division I members do not encourage student-athletes to engage in sports wagering at any level, and the actions today to modify reinstatement conditions should not be interpreted as support for wagering behaviors.”

The new regulations represent an effort to reconcile the need to confront the reality of widespread college campus betting with the need to protect collegiate sports integrity. The updated fines recognize that rookie athletes can make errors without necessarily endangering their whole athletic careers.

It is important to note that the NCAA continues to forbid student-athletes, coaches, and athletics administrators from participating in sports betting in any sport that the NCAA sponsors, including professional and collegiate sports, even in light of the modifications made to the reinstatement standards. This change in policy is a step ahead in the reassessment of NCAA sports wagering restrictions, and further talks about this developing topic are probably in store.

Athletes who were involved in betting disputes at universities like Iowa and Iowa State could find some respite from the updated ruling. Notably, Iowa State tight end DeShawn Hanika received a citation for only placing bets on Iowa State basketball games as opposed to football games. Nine other football players from both schools, however, are still concerned about the risk of having their eligibility permanently revoked since they bet on their own games.
