This November, Missourians will have the opportunity to cast a ballot on legalizing sports betting following the dismissal by a court of a lawsuit intended to stop the proposal. The ruling by Judge Daniel Green guarantees the validity of the ballot initiative, which would allow for legal sports betting in the state.
Next year could see the launch of legal online and retail sportsbooks, if they are approved by the majority of voters. The proposal calls for the construction of retail sportsbooks at or close to the state’s major sports facilities and riverboat casinos, as well as the prospect of wagers being made through mobile apps beginning in 2025.
Jack Cardetti, spokesperson for Winning for Missouri Education, praised the court’s ruling. He stated, “Today’s ruling, while expected, is nevertheless a big victory for Missourians, who overwhelmingly want to join the 38 other states that allow sports betting, so that we can provide tens of millions of permanent, dedicated funding each year to our public schools.”
Advocates argue that legalized sports betting will funnel much-needed funds into Missouri’s public schools. Cardetti added, “For too many years, Missourians have watched as fans cross state lines to place sport bets, which deprives our Missouri public schools of much-needed funding.”
If voters approve the measure in November, Missouri will join a growing number of states with legalized sports betting, providing local schools with an influx of new resources. Legal sports betting could become a reality by the end of 2025, changing the landscape for both sports fans and educators alike.
