Missouri Sports Betting Legislation Gears Up for Another Attempt in 2024

The long-running push in Missouri to legalize sports betting is about to pick up steam in 2024, as state representative Dan Houx, a Republican from Warrensburg, is preparing to file a measure in support of this cause for the third year running. Houx has encountered obstacles in the Missouri Senate on his two prior tries, but he is still upbeat about the chances for the next legislative session.

While acknowledging the difficulties encountered in the past, Representative Houx, who represents parts of Johnson County in the Missouri House, underlined the unpredictability of the legislative process. He is still optimistic that such obstacles would disappear and allow legal sports betting to proceed.

Houx said, “Well, you never know,” acknowledging the unpredictability of parliamentary dynamics. He made a suggestion that fellow Republican Denny Hoskins, who had opposed the idea in the past, may reconsider. Houx emphasized the importance of several ballot proposals getting traction, pointing out that 12 different petitions have already been approved for distribution.

Contingency Plans for Ballot Initiatives

Houx said that he would be prepared to back a ballot question should resistance to the parliamentary route arise once more. “If we’re not able to get it done and the ballot initiative is in front of me come August or November, I have no problem voting on it because I’ve carried the bill in the past,” he said, emphasizing a practical approach.

The previous two years have seen the Missouri House successfully adopt legislation demonstrating bipartisan support for sports betting. But there are obstacles in the Senate, chief among them being the efforts of fellow Republican Denny Hoskins, who wants to combine sports betting laws with video slot machine regulation.

Stakeholders in Missouri’s sports betting industry expect a change in dynamics as the legislative environment develops. Potential interest alignment, shifting viewpoints, and the impact of ballot initiatives might all lead to a successful conclusion for the legalization campaign in 2024.
