In its September sports betting report, the Mississippi Gaming Commission disclosed a $51.7 million total handle. With the largest percentage of wagers, bettors in the Coastal region led the way, followed by those in the Central region.
When the figures are broken down, the coastal region of Mississippi accounts for the largest portion of the state’s sports betting transaction, with players placing $35.2 million in wagers. After that, the Central region wagered $10.5 million, while the Northern region wagered $6 million.
Football was the most popular sport for bettors across the state. In the Northern region, football wagers reached nearly $2.7 million, making it the top betting category. Similarly, Coastal region players placed over $20.7 million on football alone, while also betting nearly $4.5 million on sports parlay cards. Central Mississippi players placed nearly $4.5 million in football wagers and $4.4 million on parlay cards during the month.
Retail sports betting across the state generated close to $7 million in taxable revenue for September. Despite these gains, mobile sports betting remains off the table in Mississippi. Legislative negotiators were unable to move forward with a final mobile sports betting proposal.
The Mobile Sports Wagering Act was passed by the state House and Senate earlier this year. However, additional efforts to legalize online betting were stalled due to worries about the effects on Mississippi’s land-based casinos.
Mississippi’s retail sports betting sector is still thriving, but there are still obstacles in the way of the growth of mobile betting.
