Match-Fixing Scandal Strains US Saber Fencing Team

Share

There is a difficult period for the US women’s saber fencing squad right now. Concerns have been raised by the struggles of members like Elizabeth Tartakovsky, Tatiana Nazlymov, and Magda Skarbonkiewicz in their first fights. On the other hand, the team has received some relief from the strong performances of Lee Keifer and Lauren Scruggs.

Tatiana Nazlymov, an Olympic qualifier, has been under investigation for possible match-fixing that occurred during the qualifying competition. The two referees who were suspended as a result of their questionable behavior gave rise to this dispute. Nazlymov declared that she was not aware of any attempts to compromise the fairness of the tournament and that she was not complicit in the dubious conduct of the referees.

Several US fencers have criticized the decision to suspend the referees, calling it “weak and futile” and failing to address deeper issues in the sport. Nazlymov endured a 13-hour arbitration hearing to investigate the match-fixing claims, ultimately being found innocent.

The hearing aimed to address broader procedural failings within the sport rather than focusing solely on Nazlymov’s case. Despite her exoneration, referees Jacobo Morales and Brandon Romo faced nine-month suspensions for breaching the USA Fencing Referee Code of Ethics.

Team Support and Emotional Strain

USA Fencing, the sport’s governing body, criticized the referees for their actions during the qualifier but cleared Nazlymov of any wrongdoing. Her teammates have not openly criticized her or suggested her involvement in match-fixing, which Nazlymov has dismissed as baseless.

USA Fencing CEO Phil Andrews acknowledged the emotional strain on the team, commenting on the trio’s early losses. The match-fixing scandal has added pressure at a time when sports betting is rapidly growing in the United States. While most high-profile events are closely monitored to prevent manipulation, this incident highlights the ongoing challenges in maintaining fair play.
