Super Bowl LVIII is one of the most hotly anticipated sporting events on the calendar, and for the people of Massachusetts, it holds even greater meaning. This will be the first year that sports fans will be able to place legal online bets on the Super Bowl, following 2023’s legislation.
Last year sports betting was legalized on January 31st, which allowed consumers to place their bets in person. The launch of online sportsbooks on March 10th came a little late.
Football fans could still use offshore betting sites in recent years, and many will stick with this option with the best offshore sportsbooks for 2024 offering a variety of markets and offers.
However, licensed online betting operators in the state of Massachusetts are expecting a bumper year, and the Super Bowl is the perfect way to kick things off.
Not only will this be great news for online sportsbook operators, but the state of Massachusetts will also benefit from a 20% tax on gross sports wagering revenue.
The Super Bowl is the biggest betting event in the U.S. and bookmakers are set to take bets from approximately 68 million Americans. If projections are correct, records are set to be smashed with around $23.1 billion in bets being placed on the match, making it the biggest betting event in U.S. history.
The build-up to Super Bowl LVIII has been as big as ever, with new commercials featuring the biggest stars being leaked on social media. The event will also draw a whole new audience with global phenomenon Taylor Swift’s fans tuning in to catch a glimpse of the pop star who will be supporting partner Travis Kelce.
Despite Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs being last season’s Super Bowl winners and having featured in four out of the last five finals including this year’s, it is the San Francisco 49ers that are favorites to win.
This would be their first Super Bowl victory since they beat the San Diego Chargers in January of 1995. The most recent appearance they made in the final was a 2020 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs, and they will be looking for revenge when they meet on February 11th at Nevada’s Allegiant Stadium.
As well as the usual outright and player prop bets that are part and parcel of every Super Bowl, sports fans in Massachusetts will also have access to a wide variety of other online betting markets that aren’t as common.
However, betting on things like which color the Gatorade will be, with Purple currently ahead of orange and blue as the favorite, will have to be done with offshore operators due to betting parameters.
Other bets include the coin toss winner, MVP, which song will be performed first during the half-time show, and whether Travis Kelce will look to upstage the eventual winners by proposing to Taylor Swift.
As Massachusetts prepares itself to be able to bet on the Super Bowl online for the first time, sports betting operators will be rubbing their hands together that this event has fallen on a year that so many extra sets of eyes will be on the final.
