In October 2024, Maryland’s sports betting market produced over $593 million in wagers, demonstrating remarkable results. According to Maryland Lottery and Gaming, the state contributed a substantial $7 million during this record-breaking month.
The sports betting market has grown quickly since it was made legal in June 2021. Residents of Maryland can now easily access betting alternatives through 12 retail locations and 11 mobile platforms. The $7,049,747 October contribution is a 21.3% increase over the $5.8 million October 2023 contribution. Since Maryland’s legalization of sports betting in December 2021, this contribution ranks third.
October 2024 saw Maryland’s highest single-month betting total yet, with wagers reaching $593.1 million. This amount reflects a 22.8% rise from the $483.1 million in bets placed in October 2023. The surge is largely attributed to the peak fall sports season.
“October is a uniquely busy month on the sports calendar because all of the major pro leagues in the U.S. are in season, along with NCAA football,” noted John Martin, Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director. “The Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders have both looked like Super Bowl contenders, so there’s definitely been extra enthusiasm in the air.”
The funds generated from sports betting directly benefit the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, supporting statewide public education initiatives. From July to October 2024 alone, sports betting contributed approximately $28.3 million to this fund. Since the program’s inception in December 2021, it has channeled over $116 million into the Blueprint fund, underscoring the positive financial impact on education.
As Maryland’s sports betting industry grows, both revenue and enthusiasm continue to climb, marking it as a key contributor to the state’s educational development and a reflection of the vibrant sports culture in the region.
