The state’s Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund received a contribution of around $7 million from sports betting activities in Maryland in May. 15% of all taxable winnings from sportsbooks go toward funding public education initiatives throughout the state of Maryland. As to the most recent report by Maryland Lottery and Gaming, the amount contributed in May is the second highest monthly total since the legalization of sports betting. Interestingly, this sum is more than twice as much as what was donated in May of the prior year.
So far this fiscal year, contributions to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund have exceeded $54.5 million. Maryland’s fiscal year spans from July 1 to June 30, indicating a strong financial commitment to enhancing educational initiatives.
Maryland’s sports betting handle saw significant year-over-year growth. Last month’s handle increased by 34.8% compared to May of the previous year, demonstrating the expanding popularity and accessibility of sports betting in the state.
Breaking down the May figures, $419.5 million of the total handle came from mobile sports betting, while retail sports wagering locations contributed an additional $12 million. Players enjoyed substantial winnings, taking home a total of $380.4 million. Online and mobile players accounted for $369.5 million of these winnings, with retail bettors winning $10.8 million.
Retail sports betting has been legal in Maryland since 2021, offering bettors the opportunity to place wagers at physical locations. The state further expanded its market by launching online sports wagering in 2022, significantly boosting accessibility and engagement among bettors.
