Sports betting activity in the state had a strong month in July, according to data released by Maryland Lottery and Gaming. There has been a noticeable increase in sports betting activity, with total bets surpassing $333.3 million.
Online sports betting took the lead in July, accounting for $324.9 million in bets made via online channels. Retail stores placed wagers totaling around $8.4 million in the meanwhile. This strong betting activity resulted in a nearly $6.3 million contribution to state sports betting funds—a notable increase over prior years.
The contribution from July was nearly double the amount generated last year and marked the fourth-highest single-month total since Maryland’s regulated sports betting market launched. According to the current regulations, Maryland’s sportsbooks are required to allocate 15% of all taxable winnings to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund. This fund supports public education initiatives throughout the state.
“This contribution is a testament to the continued growth and success of Maryland’s sports betting market,” a Maryland Lottery and Gaming spokesperson noted.
July’s contribution represented a 34.7% increase compared to the same period last year. Bettors collected over $289.5 million in winnings during the month, with $282.4 million awarded to online and mobile players and $7.1 million to retail bettors.
Retail sports betting has been legal in Maryland since 2021, and online sports wagering began in 2022. Since the market’s inception, the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund has received $94.7 million in contributions. Additionally, the state’s Problem Gambling Fund has accumulated nearly $3.3 million.
As Maryland considers potential iGaming legalization, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency is evaluating the impact online gaming could have on the state. The exploration of online gaming continues to be a significant topic as Maryland assesses its future gaming landscape.
