A large-scale internet sports betting network is believed to have involved 59 people, all of whom have been indicted by the Macau Public Prosecutions Office. Two of the defendants are still being held pending trial, and the remaining defendants have been released on bond with the requirement that they stay in the city.

This comes after a large-scale sting operation on July 2nd in Macau, Hong Kong, and Guangdong that arrested 93 individuals. MOP88.4 million (£8.5 million/€196.2 million/US$11 million) in cash was taken by authorities, while MOP22.1 million worth of bank accounts were frozen.

The betting sites, based outside of Macau, catered primarily to basketball and football matches. According to reports, they made over MOP72 million every week during the most recent UEFA Euro 2024 competition. Based on estimates, since the illicit enterprise began in 2016, it has made over MOP1.08 billion.

Online gambling is illegal throughout China, including Macau, a special administrative region known for its robust casino market. The accused face penalties that could lead to up to three years in prison.

In addition to the financial seizures, the authorities’ swift action reflects their resolve in tackling unlawful activities. The scale of the operation highlights the extensive network and sophisticated methods employed by the perpetrators.

As the legal proceedings advance, the Macau Public Prosecutions Office will ensure that justice is served. The defendants’ indictments mark a critical step in dismantling illegal betting rings and deterring future illicit activities.

The broader implications for Macau’s gaming industry are significant. Upholding strict legal standards ensures a fair and regulated environment, essential for maintaining the region’s reputation as a global casino hub.
