Sports betting in Iowa posted impressive results in November, with the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission reporting a statewide handle of nearly $315.2 million. This marks a 9% increase compared to November 2022, reflecting the steady growth of sports wagering in the state.
November’s sports wagering net receipts reached almost $30 million, a significant jump of $12 million compared to October. The majority of bets came from online platforms, with 19 operators handling close to $294 million in internet wagers. Players across Iowa won $285.1 million during the month, with online wagers accounting for $266.6 million of these winnings.
The sports betting sector also contributed over $2 million in taxes to the state in November, highlighting its economic significance. Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the federal ban on sports betting in 2018, Iowa has become a key player in the expanding U.S. market, joining 38 states and the District of Columbia in legalizing the practice.
While sports betting continues to thrive, Iowa may soon see an expansion in its gaming landscape. Local officials recently presented a plan to the state’s gambling regulators for a new casino project in Linn County.
The proposed facility, a collaboration between the Linn County Gaming Association and Peninsula Pacific Entertainment, aims to deliver a comprehensive entertainment destination. Plans include a casino featuring 700 slot machines and 22 table games, a 1,500-seat entertainment venue, multiple restaurants and bars, and an arts and cultural center.
