Recently, the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission released its December sports betting statistics, which showed a healthy handle of around $293.1 million. In comparison to December of last year, this represents an increase of nearly $10 million, demonstrating the consistent expansion of Iowa’s regulated sports betting industry. This revenue continues to grow from the month of November.
Of the total handle, online betting dominated, with 19 operators handling nearly $273.1 million in wagers. Internet net receipts reached $13.8 million, underscoring the significant role of digital platforms in Iowa’s sports betting ecosystem. Players statewide secured $279.8 million in winnings, with $259.3 million of those stemming from online bets.
Sports betting also contributed over $900,000 in taxes to the state during December, further cementing its value as a revenue generator for Iowa.
Since the US Supreme Court lifted the federal ban on sports wagering in 2018, 38 states and Washington, D.C., have legalized the practice. Iowa entered the fray over a year after the ruling, rapidly building a regulated market that continues to thrive.
New improvements in the state’s gambling industry are being pushed for by local stakeholders. Recently, the gambling regulator in Iowa received a proposal for a new casino project from the Linn County Gaming Association and Peninsula Pacific Entertainment.
In addition to a 1,500-seat entertainment center, restaurants, bars, and an arts and culture center, the ambitious design calls for a casino with 700 slot machines and 22 table games. The project might improve Iowa’s gambling and entertainment options if it is approved.
Iowa’s December sports betting numbers show that both online and in-person betting are becoming more popular. Sports betting will undoubtedly continue to be a vital component of the state’s gaming business as it seeks to diversify its gambling offerings through creative projects.
