A thorough workshop to promote cooperation between sports organizations and betting firms was held on April 11 at Olympic House in Lausanne in anticipation of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and the 2024 UEFA EURO. The aim was to align strategies, share knowledge, and enhance collaboration to provide efficient information dissemination prior to these momentous occasions.

In order to gain knowledge and techniques to improve their own events, representatives from many International Federations (IFs) interacted with the betting industry during the workshop. Presentations from UEFA’s Anti-Match-Fixing Unit and the Olympic Movement Unit on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions (OM Unit PMC) opened the session by outlining their monitoring methods and tactics for spotting anomalies and maintaining integrity.

Strategic Frameworks and Intelligence Gathering

The OM Unit PMC outlined its three-pillar strategy, emphasizing Regulation and Legislation, Awareness Raising and Capacity Building, and Intelligence and Investigations. This framework guides their efforts in ensuring fair play and integrity in sports. Moreover, the Unit’s Integrity Betting Intelligence System (IBIS) enables continuous monitoring of sports betting activities, particularly during major events like the upcoming Olympic Games Paris 2024.

During the workshop, Friedrich Martens, Head of the OM Unit PMC, underscored the significance of collaboration in combating manipulation:

“Collaboration is essential… We will work together with betting operators to exchange relevant information about irregular betting patterns or suspicious activities.”

Vincent Ven, Head of Anti-Match-Fixing at UEFA, stressed the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in safeguarding the integrity of competitions. He emphasized the need for proactive prevention and detection systems, urging participants to join forces in protecting the purity of sports. Vam said, “The main objective is to ensure robust 24/7 monitoring of the competition to complement our dedicated prevention and education programme for all participating athletes and officials. UEFA’s multi-stakeholder Anti-Match-Fixing Assessment Group will manage pre- and in-competition monitoring, ensuring that UEFA can immediately review and address any potential integrity threats to the tournament.”

During the afternoon sessions, attendees participated in interactive discussions aimed at addressing developing difficulties in the sports betting industry and exploring possible models for collaboration. To maintain the legitimacy of contests and guarantee fair play for athletes, the emphasis remained on promoting collaboration and keeping up with the most recent developments.

The session demonstrated how committed sports organizations and betting companies are to maintaining sports integrity and fairness, which is in accordance with Olympic Agenda 2020+5’s strategic goals.
